You've probably heard of the Sennheiser HD280 PRO professional headphones. But today, I want to focus on their cousins - the Sennheiser HD200 PRO headphones.

Sennheiser HD200 PRO headphone

It seems like most people start at the Sennheiser HD280 PRO. They seem to be very popular, lots of people talk about them, lots of reviews and people say they are generally a very balanced headphone.

I wanted to find out what the buzz was all about, so curiosity got the better of me.

But I didn't just want the HD280 PRO, I wanted them all, starting with the HD200 PRO and working my way up to the HD300 PROTect!

So, I bought my first pair of Sennheiser’s… the HD 200 PRO and I'm not sure what to make of it.

It's ALMOST lighter than my phone.

It comes in a plastic mold, makes me feel like I'm buying a toy!

Although...granted.. Sennheiser say they deliberately made it feathery light…. on purpose.

Now, I’m not one to fuss about the build quality of headphones because I think it's all about how you take care of them…but these ones…wow these feel so thin they could break at any time.

What's In The Box

In the box, you get the headphones, a manual and a quarter inch adapter.

That's it!

These are monitoring headphones meaning they are supposed to replicate the wider soundstage of your studio monitors.

Sennheiser also say these are designed for critical monitoring tasks in any type of recording environment - whether it's your studio or your home studio…

In fact, they say these headphones will bring your studio home.

As far as build and fit go, they are definitely very light, too light for me, I like heavier headphones.

As far as the overall style goes, I like the contours on the ear cups… that makes them quite different to other headphones.

They come in a matt black finish…

They don't really swivel 360… but they do swivel a little bit…

They have a non detachable cable on the left ear cup…

But that cable… my touch point with all headphones is always going to be the cable.

I find that is always the weakest link.

Once it cuts, that's it.

Sound Performance

What I like about these headphones is that Dolby Surround feeling they give you.

It's like you're in a movie hall and you can feel every sound effect, sensation and impact around you… to the point you glance around because you feel that you’re so immersed in that experience.

That is probably the best thing about these headphones.

They shut out everything else allowing you to really get immersed in your sound. Amp it up to over 70% and it still won't strain your ears and you won't get that annoying ringing in your ear drums that comes from increased sound pressure levels.

And, again, that's something Sennheiser take pride in with these headphones.

Each pair is tailored to protect your ears from audio damage while giving you the best monitoring experience possible.

Plus, they are closed-back, over-ear headphones and they shut out a lot of the sound from your environment.

So, who are these for?

  • Home music enthusiasts
  • EDM music producers
  • Gamers

But I'm a podcaster producer, so the bass profile is a bit too elevated for my taste. But if more bass is up your street, check out my Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones review here

To be honest, I'm not sure these motivate me to buy the HD280 PRO.

But, you're not me.

If you're into EDM, hip hop, electronic, or if you're a gamer, you'll probably like these HD 200 PRO’s for your home studio as an entry level pair of monitoring headphones.

I see you upgrading to another pair pretty quickly, however!!

These headphones are for those who like a lot of bass.

And coming at $90, you won't break the bank.
